MINDFULNESS! This is something that has changed how I look at myself and the world. I think mindfulness is becoming more well-known in our crazy hectic society and thank goodness for that. I think many of us need it!

Mindfulness is being present and aware. It is something you need to practice to get good at, just like learning to ride a bike or learning an instrument. Most of us are not automatically mindful, but keep practicing with these techniques and you’ll begin doing it without thinking!

1. WHATEVER YOU ARE DOING, STOP AND TELL YOURSELF, “THIS IS WHAT I’M DOING.”

This might sound silly but it works! How often do we just stop and think about what we are doing? Here, I’ll do it right now. “Currently I am sitting on my bed writing a blog post and listening to some calming acoustic music. My room is empty and smells like plaster.” And that’s it.

 

2. THINK ABOUT EACH OF YOUR SENSES

Stop wherever you are and whatever you are doing to think about what each of your senses are experiencing. What do I see right now? Describe it in detail. What do I hear right now? Describe it in detail. Do this with each of your senses. This puts your focus on the present moment! Try writing it down too. Writing things down makes them much more concrete and memorable! 3. DO SOMETHING YOU ENJOY

I think we can be the most mindful when we are doing something we love doinI think we can be most mindful when we are doing something we love doing.g. If you’ve ever found yourself completely immersed and in the flow of what you are doing (maybe playing a sport, writing a song, or reading) you are being mindful! You aren’t thinking about what you want for lunch, or what someone said to you yesterday that upset you. All that is on your mind is what you are doing in that present moment.  

 

4. TAKE A FEW DEEP BREATHS

This is so simple and so effective! Just stop wherever you are and take a few deep breaths. It’s amazing how much this can completely change your mood and environment. 

 

5. REMIND YOURSELF TO BE MINDFUL

It’s so easy to turn our attention to the present moment. The hard part is remembering to do it! Maybe place some reminders all around your house like sticky notes or little pieces of colored tape in random places. You could even put a reminder on your phone, (There are some really cool mindfulness apps that do that.) Whatever works for you! Keep practicing mindfulness and observe how much more calm and content you feel!
